“Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says: ‘In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.'” ~ 2 Cor 6:1-2 (full readings)
Whitney’s Reflections: As we begin Lent, we must remember that the Lord has “heard” us and “helped” us. Our journey toward Christ begins with these confirming words from God. Our sinful nature apprehends us each day. The character of Jesus is imprinted on us at our Baptism and by this we are able to die of ourselves to pray, fast and give alms. Uniting in His passion, God calls us to aid one another with encouragement to make sacrifices. He also cautions us not to be vain in receiving the fusion of Christ’s character to our souls. What good is a sacrifice of pain if we boast? Are we fasting, praying, and alms-giving for the approval of others? How will you die to sin in lent? When will your “yes” be given to fully unite in His sufferings? Run to Christ and fight to defend his Mystical Body. During Lent we must graciously praise God for our sufferings that unite us with His passion.
