Shane’s Reflections: Today, Catholic Christians throughout the world celebrate the help God gives us through our brothers-in-arms, the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. It is a wonderful reminder that reality is often far different than what we can ascertain through our eyes and ears. Even if evil seems to proliferate, Christ never leaves us out-gunned (Mt 18:10). Each of us has been entrusted to the care of a being of such goodness – not to mention raw supernatural power – that were our eyes to see them, our most likely reaction would be holy terror!

Faith Challenge: The prophet Elisha and his servant once found themselves surrounded by the Syrian army. The servant reacted the way any of us would, “Alas! What shall we do?” But Elisha simply prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened. Then, when the servant looked up he saw how “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha” (2 Kings 6:15-17). Pray like Elisha today: Ask the Lord to open the eyes and ears of your heart to the truth of the heavenly army surrounding you, and then take that truth with you into the skirmishes of the day.
