“When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.” ~ Jon 3:10 (full readings)
.
Mark’s Reflections: What an amazing God we have! He repents based on our humble and imperfect contrition. David knew the great mercy of God (Psalm 51). Abraham called upon it to save Sodom (Gn 18). What about us today? Do we even recognize that our God is ever ready to receive our repentance over the evil of our present culture of death? With over 55 million babies aborted since 1973 in the U.S. alone, it is difficult to fathom that our Lord has yet to carry out his original Ninevah plans with us. With all this carnage around us we have to wonder when God will carry forth His justice. Still, we trust that God’s mercy is greater than His justice. And so we must continue to proclaim, a la Jonah, the grave sins of our times. We must be bold in the presence of evil! In this time of Lent, let us be willing to sacrifice more for those who cannot speak for themselves. Let us commit to no longer be silent in the presence of evil. Let us expose the lies of a generation and seek to share the mercy of God with those who are desperately in need.
