18 Sep Compete Well (1 Tim 6:11-12) by Chris Engelhart
“But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” ~ 1 Tim 6:11-12 (full readings)

Chris’ Reflections: Last month, we were blessed to go on a mission trip to Peru and build four houses. We built the houses high on a hill, “competing” against gravity in order to bring the necessary building materials – cement, sand, rocks, wooden boards – to the top of the hill. The hard work was made easier by the love and joy of our mission team and the locals we encountered. I was assigned to one of the houses and spent time with the family who would be living there. Our group bonded with them as they helped us build, hammering thousands of nails. It was a joy for me to show one of the young sons how to nail the panels for the walls. When the work was done, a priest blessed the home and we enjoyed a traditional Peruvian meal cooked by the mother. St. Paul speaks about being content with only the basics, and we were blessed to help this family with that, as well as learning true contentment and peace from their grateful, humble lifestyle. In our competing up the hill, we shared love, the foundation of the Gospel of Life which leads to true happiness in this life and eternal happiness in the next.
