…he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence…  ~ Lk 11:5-13 (full readings)

Paul’s Reflections:  Today’s gospel by Luke is also referred to as the “Persistent Friend”.  In the reading, Jesus uses a parable of a friend in need to continue to teach us about prayer.  “Friend , lend me three loaves of bread’…. I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.” The battle for human life/dignity (abortion, assisted suicide, etc.) has been raging for a long time.  So we as Pro-Lifers need to hear this.   We need to continue being persistent in our prayers and actions.  “For everyone who asks, receives;…and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”   There have been set backs over the years with this battle and I have no doubt there will be more. But with this reaffirming message from Jesus, we can all be reenergized.  We still have a great nation and it can become even greater. We have many leaders (church and political) who need our prayers.  We have upcoming elections and we need to be active and informed.  We have pregnancy resource centers that need assistance.  We have fellow brothers and sisters who are contemplating or have been impacted by abortion that need our love and support. The list of needs is long but our God is great “…how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”  As Dr. Pat Castle often says “Forward, forward, always forward.”  With prayer and action that is the direction we will go.
