30 Sep Don’t Lose Faith (Job 3:3) by Doug Lugge
“Perish the day on which I was born, the night when they said, ‘The child is a boy!’” ~ Job 3:3 (full readings)
Doug’s Reflections: The reading from the Book of Job is the part of Job’s life where he feels abandoned by God as he has lost his family and all that he owns. He cries out for an end of his life and questions why he was even born. It should remind us of those who are struggling with their faith, the elderly who feel abandoned by their families, and the mother’s who are with child and feel trapped or who are being pressured to end the life of their unborn child. Like Job, who does not lose his faith in God, we are called to help the elderly know that Jesus has not abandoned them. To remind them that they are loved and are not a burden, that their lives have been an important example of how we should live our lives. Like Job, who was rewarded for his faith in God, let us show mothers the gifts that their children will bring to them, more than they can know, and to remind them that they are not in it alone, that they have help. St. Jerome, who’s feast day is today, speaks of the mothers 1700 years ago, who were struggling with the same fears when he said, “I cannot bring myself to speak of the many virgins who daily fall and are lost to the bosom of the Church, their mother.” Some women, when they find themselves with child through their sin, use drugs to procure abortion, and when, as often happens, they die with their offspring, they enter the lower world laden with the guilt.” Let us, who know that Christ has won the victory, not lose souls who are in fear, but with God’s help, bring them back to Him, He who has died for their (and our) sins.
