16 Mar Faith Creates Miracles (Jn 4:53-54) by Dr. Rich Reich
“He and his whole household thereupon became believers. This was the second sign that Jesus performed.” ~ Jn 4:53-54 (full readings)
.
Rich’s Reflections: Miracles do not create faith as much as faith creates miracles. Today’s Gospel is the second of seven signs that Jesus performs that are highlighted in the Book of John. In John’s Gospel, seven signs (miracles) are recorded “to help [us] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, so that through this faith [we] may have life in His name” (Jn 20:31). The signs, worked by Jesus, are: (1) changing water into wine at a wedding, (2) a remote healing of a royal official’s son, (3) curing a man who was ill for 38 years, (4) multiplying the loaves and fishes, (5) walking on the water, (6) giving sight to the man born blind, and (7) raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus disapproves of faith as merely an effect and makes it primarily the cause. He rebukes the people: “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you do not believe” (Jn 4:48). A life devoid of faith will result in a life devoid of miracles. As LIFE Runners, we need to have faith in the eventual end of legalized abortion. This may seem like a miracle in itself, but something that definitely will not happen without our faith. We run to End abortion, for Christ has destroyed the power of death, and therefore the power of abortion.
