27 May God and Country (Ps 79:8) by Bonnie Sabin

God and Country
“Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us, for we are brought very low.”
~ Ps 79:8 (full readings)
.
Bonnie’s Reflections:  Recently we observed the annual National Day of Prayer for the United States (always first Thursday of May).  It was great to gather around the flag pole at Sunset Hills City Hall and pray for our government, military, media, business, education, Church, and family.  There has been a call to prayer and fasting many times in our country, the first in 1775 by the Continental Congress and notably in 1863 by President Lincoln.  In 1983 the first annual National Day of Prayer was held in Constitution Hall.  The responsorial psalm for today can well expresses our nation’s position before God.

Remember not against us the iniquities of the past;
may your compassion quickly come to us,
for we are brought very low.

Help us, O God our savior,
because of the glory of your name;
Deliver us and pardon our sins
for your name’s sake.

Let the prisoners’ sighing come before you;
with your great power free those doomed to death.
Then we, your people and the sheep of your pasture,
will give thanks to you forever;
through all generations we will declare your praise.

We are indeed “brought very low” with afflictions such as abortion and racial unrest.  We are “prisoners” to the extent that we are slaves to sin. With the upcoming presidential elections the cultural wars will crescendo.  It will be a war about Christianity itself.  We must, more than ever, be God’s people and the “sheep of His pasture.”

Faith Quote:
 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword… Whoever does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” ~ Matthew 10:34, 38
