29 Sep Guardian Angels (Rev 12:7-8) by Kevin McNicholas
“Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.” ~ Rev 12:7-8 (full readings)
.
Kevin’s Reflections: Angels are defined as Messengers of God, and they are very real Servants of God. Sometimes the messages they bring are manifested in an obvious way, such as when St. Gabriel appeared and brought the Good News to the Holy Mother at the Annunciation. Other times they are messengers of salvation, as in the first reading from Revelation where St. Michael, God’s Messenger, fights and defeats satan and then casts him out of Heaven. Angels work in conjunction with God; they are created by God to do His Will. There is a book we love to read to our children called Angel in the Waters, (www.angelinthewaters.com) in which a baby converses with their angel before, during, and after their birth. This led me to picture our children’s Guardian Angels kneeling by their cribs with their wings extended over our children as they slept, keeping them safe until the next morning. The Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is October 2nd each year, and our daughter Ellie was born October 2nd, 2012. No coincidence there, she loves the Angel of God prayer, we say it very frequently. How many times in each of our lives have we had a near miss on the road, or had something beyond our power work out at the last second? Thanks be to God, our angels are always there!
* Kevin is a School Social Worker in Southern Illinois. He and his wife Laura have been blessed with two living miracles: a 3 year old daughter named Elliana (“the Lord Answers”) and a 1 1/2 year old son named Jeremiah (“God is Exalted”), and one miracle now in Heaven, may our baby Jordan (8.12.15 – 9.3.15) rest in peace. They have also been blessed during the 9 1/2 years of their marriage to be able to visit Catholic pilgrimage sites worldwide, as well as to serve their Parish and community..
