11 Jul How Are You Being Sent? (Mt 10:16) by Jimmy Mack
“Jesus said to his Apostles: ‘Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.’” ~ Mt 10:16 (full readings)
Jimmy’s Reflections: How many times have you been told that you are a gift from God? By your parents? Religion teachers? Vacation Bible School (VBS) leaders? In that we are His gift, God in His infinite wisdom is giving His gift to the world. Look again where you, the gift, will be presented: in the midst of wolves. Many images come up about wolves. VBS programs portray friendly animals: elephants, giraffes, pigs, horses, sheep, etc. I have yet to see one that shows a friendly wolf. The teenage equivalent of VBS, such as Teen Challenge, Young Life, FCA, etc., will touch on topics related to wolves. This day I celebrate the anniversary of attending my first Steubenville (Ohio) University Conference for Teens at which I heard this Bible verse. I came home fired up from my “Jesus High” to serve God anywhere; even among the wolves in my life. Through trial and error, reading the Bible/other books, and listening to church ministers and youth group leaders, I learned, and continued to learn. Just as the three wise men were led to the Christ child, so I try to pursue wisdom so as to be shrewd for God; and peaceful among whomever I am with.

Faith Challenge: God does not call most of us to move hundreds of miles away to serve Him. Your mission field is right under your feet. Yet your feet can turn in any multitude of 360 degree directions. Where is the Holy Spirit sending you? Are you willing to be a gift among the wolves in your life?
