19 Mar How Can That Be? (Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24A) by Paul Westendorf
“…Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about… Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid…” ~ Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24A (full readings)
Paul’s Reflections: In my younger years a favorite sports apparel maker was called “No Fear” (they might even still be around). They had great slogans and if you wore their gear you were basically telling whoever to bring their best because they were going to need it. Well God did just that with Joseph. He brought His best, in Mary and His son Jesus, to Joseph to protect, guide and care for. How God did it would have had most of us running in the other direction. Joseph was pretty sure he didn’t want anything to do with this situation either but being a righteous man you know he prayed to God for guidance. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.” In today’s terminology we would call that a Crisis Pregnancy. In today’s culture the odds are staggering that pregnancy would have ended in an abortion. (There are almost 3,000 abortions everyday.) Joseph upon waking took Mary his wife into his home. Joseph is an awesome example to us in the Pro-Life movement. We know from talking with post abortive women that 82% would have chosen LIFE if just ONE person had encouraged them. God said “do not be afraid” and Joseph showed “No Fear”, he let God use him to be the ONE to make a difference.
