18 Feb Idle No More (Lev 19:16) by Dr. Rich Reich
“Nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor’s life is at stake. I am the Lord.” ~ Lev 19:16 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: If you have not gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church. Preparation for confession should include an examination of conscience, in which you think about the sins you have committed since your last confession. A good examination of conscience usually involves reflecting on your obedience to the ten commandments. Upon reflection of the fifth commandment, “Thou shall not kill,” you may think that you are not an offender, but we are warned in today’s scripture that we should not “stand by idly when [our] neighbor’s life is at stake. (Lev 19:16)” Our silence or inaction towards defending the unborn could be viewed as implied consent of abortion. We need to warn people and speak out to dissuade them from the evil of abortion so that they may live in peace (the unborn, parents, and family); otherwise we are held responsible (Ezek 3:18).
