Parable of the lost sheep
“Jesus said to his disciples:  ‘What is your opinion?  If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?'”
~ Mt 18:12 (full readings)

Rich’s Reflections:  In the Gospel today, Jesus tells the story of the Lost Sheep.  When the man who owns 100 sheep discovers that he has one missing, he leaves the 99 in search of the one that became lost.  When he finds the lost sheep that wandered off, he brings it back to the fold.  It is a great story that tells how our Father in Heaven cares for all of His children.  Common sense would make you think that the man jeopardized the lives of the 99 sheep that he left behind, or in some way impacted their quality of life.  One argument for the pro-abortion position is that it is acceptable to end a life if bringing that new life into the world would result in a net-negative effect to those already born (e.g., a family that is already struggling financially to survive).  The parable of the Lost Sheep is counter to this pro-abortion position, because it clearly demonstrates that all of God’s children have infinite value in the eyes of the Lord.  It does not matter if human laws have legalized the destruction of human life through abortion, we are taught by Jesus that we are to value every human life.
