23 May John 14:26 (The Advocate)
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name–He will teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.” John 14:26 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: Jesus told the apostles that an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, would be sent to teach them everything they needed to know. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through our conscience, indicating what is right and wrong, and helps us to make the decisions that correspond to the will of God. The Holy Spirit, however, doesn’t just tell us what should be done, but He also gives us the capacity to do what He commands. Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit we allow ourselves to follow His promptings and obey divine inspirations. These gifts include wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Through the Holy Spirit we develop our relationship with Jesus to the fullest. One cannot believe in Jesus without sharing in His Holy Spirit, because it is through the Holy Spirit that we are taught who Jesus is. Holy Spirit, we need you. Come to us and renew us. Make us attentive to your inspirations and help us respond to your promptings. Amen.
