“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” ~ John 6:9 (full readings)

Rosemary’s Reflections: Isn’t it amazing how a child’s offerings were able to feed over 5000 people? While the disciples thought the food too meager, Our Lord Jesus saw it as a gift of potential. The scene is similar to our day and age–some people see the unborn as a small mass of cells with nothing to offer. Some only see the negatives of an unwanted pregnancy, how it’s a burden rather than a hidden blessing. But as we have seen in today’s Gospel, the young boy offered what he has and Jesus had multiplied it over ten-fold. What seemed so small and insignificant made a difference to thousands of people! It’s like the ripple effect–a tiny drop of water expands throughout the whole pond. Every person is created in the image of God with a purpose. Although we may not be able to see what that purpose is, our faith tells us to trust in the Lord’s plan, for He will help us to prosper and grow like the loaves and fishes.

Faith Challenge: We all have our own loaves and fishes–moments when we feel nothing we do will make a difference. But who are we to sell ourselves short of the price He paid for us on Good Friday? Although the road may be long and winding, we cannot stop running this course. Maybe there’s a person who needs a boost of encouragement the mile ahead? Even a simple hello can change a person’s day. Let us always be willing to offer up our loaves and fishes to Our Lord and let Him work through us, no matter what society tells us.
