Let God Steer (James 4:14) by Kevin McNicholas

Kevin’s Reflections:  No, we don’t, do we?  I suppose, looking back over my last 32 years, that I can say that about a lot of things.  We found out that after 5 years of infertility and one week into the adoption process that we were pregnant with Ellie.  The day before, we had no idea that we would become parents, and thus our lives changed forever, for the better.  Had we adopted, we would have been just as excited to find out that we had been selected as adoptive parents.  We never have any idea what God may have planned for us, but Faith tells us that His ways are better than ours, and that He has a greater plan than we can ever fully realize.  As humans, we are naturally inclined to try to control what goes on around us.  As Christians, we are humbled and subject to aligning our lives in accordance with God’s Will.  Mike Sweeney of the Kansas City Royals loves to tell the story of a tandem bicycle sticker that a friend gave him, and told him “Mike, you sit on the back seat and pedal, and God sits on the front seat and steers.  Don’t try to take God’s seat!”  So today, I am going to be pedaling even harder as I really don’t know what my life will be like tomorrow, but I do know that whatever course life takes, God will always be steering!
* Kevin works at an Alternative Education program serving three counties in Southern Illinois.  He and his wife Laura have a 16 month old miracle named Elliana (“the Lord Answers”) to love, and a son on the way!  They have been blessed during the 7 years of their marriage to travel to Catholic pilgrimage sites worldwide.
