“Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name.  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits
.” ~ Ps 103:1-2 (full readings)
Stephen’s Reflections: On Saturday June 8th my Mom took my two daughters and I to an Ocean Day at Island Beach State Park in Seaside, NJ.  There was information about Hurricane Sandy, keeping the oceans clean and saving the beaches and bays.  When people see the destruction and tragedy they react.  Most people want to help.  They donate money, supplies, time and labor.  But with so many causes, one seems to be neglected, suppressed, or ignored.  It is something that occurs in the open and in the shadows: abortion.  I wonder if people saw the destruction and tragedy of abortion if they would react and change their minds.  After seeing what happens to the child, the physical and emotional scars on the woman, the crude conditions in abortion clinics, or a child who survives a botched abortion being terminated or left to die…would they change their minds?  As my daughters and I went on the beach, the image of the ocean was overwhelming.  There was water beyond what the eyes could see.  It reminded me of life.  Sometimes if we try to look too far ahead or look too broadly we lose focus.  But when we stood in the ocean water and felt the water hitting our feet we could understand what needs to be done and what we can do.  Before we left we received a mini flashlight as a prize.  It appropriately summed up the day: “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn 8:12).

Faith Challenge: For those who argue that we need to “control the population”, feel it is in the “best interest” of a pregnant woman to abort the baby because the woman is too young or too poor or the child would be a “detriment” to society, I offer the Sermon on the Mount–the Beatitudes.  I offer Matthew 19:14: “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'” I offer the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.
