Rich’s Reflections:  In today’s Gospel, Mary is confronted by the angel Gabriel, who tells her she will conceive in her womb and bear the Son of God.  When I reflect on this, it strikes my heart with raw emotion and awe.  Why would the all-holy God become a human being?  In other words, why would the Creator of the entire universe humble Himself in becoming a creature?  It is because God is love, and the root of love is humility.  The more experience that we have of true love, the more we come to realize that growing deeper in love means going deeper in humility.  Mary seems to realize this in the Gospel today as she responds humbly to the angel Gabriel, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.  May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).  Mary is a model for all human beings.  Like her, we should see ourselves as servants of the Lord, and in doing so, we are loving the Lord and humbling ourselves.  Lord, I pray that every woman who finds herself pregnant follows Mary’s example of love and humility by choosing to say yes to life.  Amen.
