27 Jul Lovers of Themselves (2 Tim 3:2-5) by Anna Dwinger
“People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” ~ 2 Tim 3:2-5 (full readings)
Anna’s Reflections: The world we live in rejects God. They quote our own Bible back to us, “The Greatest commandment is love!” and then they call us hateful and intolerant. They cry out, “love is all we need!” Then they proceed to tell us how to define that love. Their love is selfish, about making themselves happy. They are lovers of themselves. They say, “I can marry whom I wish. I can do what I want. Love is love.” Or they say, “You are pregnant and don’t want to be? Easy, just get rid of that ball of cells, it’s just a fetus. It’s your body, it’s your right. It’s no big deal.” If we tell them marriage is defined as between one man and one woman, as God established it to be from the beginning, we are small minded. We are judging. We are ignorant. If we say its murder to abort a child they say we are torturing women, but disregard the fact they are destroying an innocent life. They say the abortion laws protect women by making abortion safe. We know full well this is a lie. Abortion protects no one, especially not the child, and definitely not the minds of the women who choose to do that. And it is tempting to debate them and argue with them. We could go in circles all day long and get no where. Let me remind you, they are blind. 2 Cor 4:4 says, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Should we then be surprised by their blindness? No, absolutely not! But do not be discouraged, Gal 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Yes, I believe we should stand boldly when faced with opposition. When the world says left, we should say right! Always speak the truth, never back down, never let go of your faith! But our focus, our true mission, should be on healing the hurting, binding the wounds of the brokenhearted, and to bring souls to the point of salvation. The woman in crisis needs our love. Whether they already had an abortion, or are thinking of getting one, they need God’s love. Ps 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” They need just ONE person to tell them the opposite of what the world says. It takes just ONE person to speak the truth to them in love. My favorite statistic is this one, “82% of post-abortion mothers said JUST ONE supportive person would have changed her mind.” Be the ONE! Their hearts are open and ready. The moment this stops being political, and starts getting personal, is when you are the one pregnant and confused. This is the moment when the heart of Christ and the love of God can shine through us the brightest! Let the world call you a liar. They are attacking God’s word, give it to Him. Rom 12:19 says, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay.’ says the Lord.” So do not debate it, do not defend your stance. Speak the truth, yes. But don’t pick a fight. Simply tell them you are a LIFE Runner, you help women in crisis and save the lives of children. And perhaps ask, “Exactly how is that an attack on women’s rights?” I don’t think they will have an answer. And even if they do answer, do not feel the need to respond. Do as Christ told His disciples, shake the dust off your feet and move on (see Mt 10:14). We don’t have to change the minds of the liberal women’s rights activists. That’s not our job anyways, that is the Holy Spirit’s. We just have to reach out a hand to the hurting and bind their wounds. Be the hands and feet of Christ. We can make a difference if we keep our ears and eyes open.
