“And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus drew himself near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.” ~ Luke 24:15 (full readings)
.
Teresa’s Reflections: In Luke’s Gospel we encounter two disciples on the journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Along this journey Jesus joins them; however, they fail to recognize Him. How often along our journey in life do we fail to recognize Jesus right beside us? How often are we caught up in the conversations and debates of our everyday lives that we don’t notice Him right there walking along the journey with us? The two disciples had left Jerusalem, most likely feeling exhausted, confused, lost, and overwhelmed, much like a young mother must feel when she finds herself pregnant and not knowing where to turn. The Gospel shows us however, that Jesus meets us exactly where we are in the journey, no matter how broken, how worn out, or how unworthy and overwhelmed we may feel. He is there for us whether we recognize him or not. As we go through our daily lives, we encounter many who wish to debate the sanctity of life and question when life truly begins. Meeting people where they are on this journey and being Jesus for others is essential to changing hearts and minds. It is by being the example of Jesus’ love that eyes will be opened and He will be recognized as the giver of all life.
