Matthew 14:27 (Leap of Faith!)

02 Aug Matthew 14:27 (Leap of Faith!)

Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion (FB), provided by LIFE Runners (FB). Upcoming Guest Authors.

“At once (Jesus) spoke to them, ‘Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.'” Matthew 14:27 (full readings)
Rob Reflections: Whenever I read about courage, I am reminded that courage is not the absence of fear; it is the overcoming of fear. Jesus knows who we are, He knows our fears, and He knows how overpowering our fears, big and small, can be. And then He asks us to set aside those fears and conquer those fears through trust in Him. G.K. Chesterton articulated this idea in his great book Orthodoxy when he wrote “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” Readiness to die for our Faith is a Christ-like and laudable attribute. However, the real question is are we ready to LIVE for our Faith?
* Today’s image is the cliff divers of Acapulco, who pray at a shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe before each leap of faith.

Faith Challenge: Reflect today on those for which you would be willing to die. Your Faith? Your Family? Your Freedom? Now ask God for the courage to LIVE for those things.

Feast Day: Saint Eusebius of Vercellisuffered for the Faith at the hands of a hostile emperor and Arian heretics. He eventually died peacefully in his late 80’s. Was he ready to die for the Faith? Yes. But he continued to courageously live the Faith and call others to do the same.

Faith Quote: “It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” ~ Mark Twain.
