26 Mar Obey to the Letter (Mt 5:18) by Dr. Rich Reich
“Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” ~ Mt 5:18 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: During the 40 days of Lent we imitate Jesus in the desert when He overcame the temptations of the devil. We pray, fast, and engage in acts of spiritual self-discipline so that we can strengthen ourselves against these temptations. The devil tempts us to modify God’s commandments so that we might break them and justify our actions. The Culture of Death tries to justify the killing of innocent unborn children by giving excuses: the parents can’t afford to feed and take care of the baby; adoption is not an option, because the parents would not be able to part with the baby; or the parents were not ready to be parents in the first place. Jesus challenges us to follow God’s law to the letter (Mt 5:18), and not to allow it to be twisted to our own liking. This Lent, let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide us to the truth in areas where we may let our culture condition our ideals and morals.

Faith Challenge: Where have we compared ourselves with others rather than to God’s standards? This Lent, realign yourself with God’s standards and obey as Jesus obeyed.
