03 Feb On the Right Side of the Fence, Every Time (2 Sam 24:10) by Scott Casmer
“Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: ‘I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish.'” ~ 2 Sam 24:10 (full readings)

Scott’s Reflections: Today’s reading from the second book of Samuel talks about David’s remorse for choosing poorly under circumstances where it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. This can serve as a reminder for many of the actions we take each day, including those in support of the Pro-Life movement. We must use our moral compass prior to taking action. There are times when we must distance ourselves from those who fail to do so, even if their stated intent aligns with ours. Recently, here in Colorado Springs, there was a brutal tragedy that made national headlines. A man who claimed to be Pro-Life killed several people at the local Planned Parenthood. The logical disconnect of killing people to save lives was obvious to virtually everybody but him. The true Pro-Life community quickly made it clear that his actions were completely unacceptable and in direct opposition to the community. However, the damage had already been done to the families of those who were killed and to the message of peaceful change that the Pro-Life community adheres to so tightly. While none of us would ever consider taking similar actions, even minor indiscretions could do damage to the reputation of the community. We need to always remember to be Christ-like in our approach to sharing our loving message each day.

Faith Challenge: If you see somebody sharing a Pro-Life message in an adversarial manner or breaking laws in the process, gently remind that person that there are more effective ways to reach the goal.
