Persecution (Acts 7:54) by Scott Casmer

Scott’s Reflections:  Today’s reading is about the martyrdom of Stephen.  Stephen called out society on their evil ways that were in direct opposition to God’s law.  “When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him.”  Clearly, it was inconvenient for society to accept the word of God and change their ways.  So, “…they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.”  It is not hard to see how those who promote trying to live in accordance with God’s will are persecuted in today’s society.  When the issue is as grave and divisive as abortion, the resistance to the message and the associated persecution become more intense.  Those who have openly prayed to end abortion or have approached others on the topic have certainly encountered a hostile response at times.  Certainly, we all pray that paying the ultimate price, as Stephen did, is never necessary for those who speak the truth.  Regardless of the suffering we encounter, we need to continue to love those who oppose us.  Stephen gave us an outstanding model for this when he prayed right before his death, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
