29 Jan Pro-Life Roots (Mk 4:17) by Dr. Rich Reich
“But they have no roots; they last only for a time. Then when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.” ~ Mk 4:17 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel, Jesus explains the parable of the seeds to His Apostles. He explains that the seeds sown on rocky ground receive the word with joy, but they have no roots. As a result, they quickly fall away with the first sign of tribulation or persecution because of the word. In our Pro-Life ministries we need to have deep roots in order to stand strong against persecution for what we believe. That means that we need to be educated on Pro-Life as well as Pro-Choice arguments. There are 5 common ways in which abortion supporters discriminate against preborns (identified by Glen Flores of the Pro-Life Alliance at the University of Florida). First, they feel intrinsically superior to preborns (i.e., question preborn personhood); second, their feelings of superiority lead to neglect (e.g., “My body, my choice.”); third, they may have ulterior motives (e.g., “How can you be pro-life and for war?”); fourth, they despair (e.g., “How will we feed all of these children?”); and fifth, they confuse priorities (e.g., “Don’t legislate morality!”). Be prepared to defend against these Pro-Choice arguments. Take deep root in the rich Pro-Life soil you have been planted, because you will be persecuted for your defense of the unborn.

Faith Quote: “Destruction of the embryo in the mother’s womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed upon this nascent life. To raise the question whether we are here concerned already with a human being or not is merely to confuse the issue. The simple fact is that God certainly intended to create a human being and that this nascent being has been deliberately deprived of his life. And that is nothing but murder.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
