21 Jan Protecting the Innocent (1 Sm 19:5) by Amy Kosta
“When he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the LORD won a great victory for all Israel, you were glad to see it. Why, then, should you become guilty of shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?” ~ 1 Sm 19:5 (full readings)
.
Amy’s Reflections: In today’s first reading, King Saul is jealous of David who has been praised by the women of Israel after returning from battle. Saul fears that David will take his place as king so his intention is to kill David, however his son Jonathan was a much wiser man than the king. Jonathan pleads with the Saul to spare David as he has done him no wrong. These words of Jonathan touched the heart of his father and saved the life of David. Words are a powerful tool; they can either spark hatred or spread love. As we pro-life people prepare to “March for Life” across America in the coming days, let us choose our words wisely. Our goal is to protect the lives of the unborn and to those vulnerable women targeted by the culture of death. We are a powerful witness for life and we must have our voices heard, but with love and respect and in a peaceful manor. Hearts may be changed through our words and our prayers in God’s time. We are the Lord’s vehicle to reach those who are ignorant to the pain and suffering caused by abortion to the innocent child, the mother and our entire society. Let us be like Jonathan; protecting life by spreading love and hope to others through our words and actions. All in Christ…For Pro-Life!
