“Was not our heart burning within us while he was speaking on the road and explaining to us the Scriptures?” ~ Lk 24:13 (full readings)
.
John’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel Jesus became the first LIFE Runner just after His Resurrection in order to comfort and aid His disciples, Cleopas and companion, in understanding the meaning of His death and Life while traveling the sixty stadia from Jerusalem to Emmaus (approximately “10K”). To the disciples, Jesus was a stranger they encountered on the road, but as he answered their questions and doubts, he touched their hearts through the Words of Scripture. As we run, it becomes easy to read the reaction in people’s eyes–whether they are supportive or turn a way–regretful and suffering from past experience. God’s Words to “REMEMBER the Unborn” cut very deeply so our running becomes a pilgrimage of sacrifice and prayer for the tragedy of abortion to the baby and mother and father. Each person we pass is an opportunity to evangelize and heal. Stop and talk if you get “the Look” that says “I want to understand”. Then you, too, are on the Road to Emmaus. As we encounter others on the road, will they grow to receive Jesus’ message in our humility? In our charity? In our knowledge of the gospel of Life and the sin of abortion?

Faith Challenge: 1) Know the LIFE Runners Creed. 2) Know and be able to explain the following (from Scott Klusendorf of the Life Training Institute): The science of embryology shows that each of us is a distinct and complete human being from the earliest stage of development, and philosophy teaches that there is no difference between the earliest embryo and who we are today that can justify killing anyone of us.
