Jesus said to him, ‘Have you come to believe because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.’

Kevin’s Reflections:  The Apostle Thomas, the world’s most famous doubter, declared he would not believe that Christ was alive until he saw the nail marks in His hands, put his fingers into those nail marks, and put his hand into His side.  Christ, of course, obliged him, but then blessed those who believed without seeing.  This episode, in the context of our fight for the dignity of every human life, calls to mind a powerful episode in my own life.  This was a time I considered myself an unbeliever in Christ, and sympathetic to some “pro-choice” arguments.  After all, why should we place the needs of a mere “potential” life, (the fetus), over those of an “actual” life, (that of the mother)?  Well, after two miscarriages following the birth of our first son, my wife was advised to have an amniocentesis.  One glance at the screen of that high-quality ultrasound and I would never consider an unborn child a “potential” life again.  He was the real living thing alright, and we even thought he looked like his brother!  So then, even in the years before I returned to Christ, my eyes told me the truth of the “pro-life” position.  I certainly understand the power of ultrasound images to awaken parents to the truth of the real, human life within the womb of the mother, and pray that their use will continue to grow.  I pray too that our culture of death can be turned around so that more and more parents will believe in the sanctity and dignity of every unborn life, even without actually seeing that little boy or girl inside.
