21 Jul Sign of the Cross (Mt 12:38) by Dr. Rich Reich
“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.'” ~ Mt 12:38 (full readings)
.
Rich’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel, the scribes and Pharisees request that Jesus show them a sign. During difficult times, we may also test Jesus and desire a sign of His power and fidelity despite the many grace-filled experiences in our lives. In response to our request, Jesus gives us the sign of the cross. Jesus told the scribes and Pharisees that “the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights” (Matthew 12:40). In other words, Jesus gave them the sign of the cross as the sign they wanted to see Him work. The cross is the ultimate sign of Christ’s love for us; a true sign of His power and fidelity. The next time you are experiencing a difficult situation, stop and look upon the cross. Jesus loves you! Lord, may I always see the cross as a sign of Your everlasting love and fidelity. Amen.
