15 May Sorrow Turns to Joy (Jn 16:21) by Dr. Rich Reich
“When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.” ~ Jn 16:21 (full readings)
.
Rich’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that they could expect that the sorrow that was about to come upon them because of the Cross would be transformed into an enduring and abounding source of joy. The counter-emotions of anguish and joy are related to the labor that a pregnant woman experiences and the joy of giving birth to her child. Often pregnant women are not given the support that they need when they are being forced to make a decision about the life of their unborn child. As Pro-Lifers, we need to be that support for them. We know that 82 percent of women who aborted would have chosen life if just one person had encouraged them (statistics from Vitae Foundation). We need to help them see past the sorrow and anguish and look forward to the joy that comes in the birth of their child. We need to be that One!
