17 Feb Spiritual Blindness (Mk 8:18) by Dr. Rich Reich
“Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear?” ~ Mk 8:18 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel, Jesus was appalled at His disciples’ spiritual blindness. They were blinded to the significance of the two multiplications of the loaves and fishes. They were blinded to Who Jesus was. This blindness would eventually lead His disciples to abandon Jesus on Calvary. Spiritual blindness caused Jesus’ death on the cross. Today, spiritual blindness causes the murder of thousands of unborn children every day. Spiritual blindness is caused by sin. The darkness of sin blinds us (1 Jn 2:11). The abortion debate rests on the moral status of the unborn: if the unborn are fully human, then nearly every abortion performed is equivalent to murder. Most “pro-abortion” advocates argue, however, that although the unborn entity is human (belonging to the species Homo sapiens), it is not a person and hence not fully human. Selfish desires blind them from seeing the unborn as people. Pray that those who are blind will one day see the dignity of all human life.
