04 Aug Step Out of the Boat (Mt 14:28) by Dr. Rich Reich
“Lord, if it is really You, tell me to come to You across the water.” ~ Mt 14:28 (full readings)
.
Rich’s Reflections: In today’s Gospel, Peter got out of the boat and started to walk towards Jesus on the water. Peter became afraid and began to sink. After pulling Peter out of the water, Jesus exclaimed: “How little faith you have!…Why did you falter?” (Mt 14:31) If Jesus was disappointed in Peter’s little faith, what about the faith of those who were still in the boat? If Jesus is displeased with those sinking in the water, what about those who are working their way up to sinking? What about those who have little faith in the dignity of all human life, born and unborn, and dare not venture out of the boat to defend them on the sidewalks of the abortion clinics. We need to share our faith of the dignity of all human life with others to give them courage to step out of the boat, and we also need to continue to keep our eyes on Jesus so that we do not falter.
