“It is He who gives to everyone life and breath and everything.” ~ Acts 17:25 (full readings)

John’s Reflections: St. Paul’s conduct in Athens set an example for all future missionaries. Acts 17:17 tells us that he debated in the synagogue and the public square with whoever happened to be there. Preaching the Gospel of Life concerning the Risen Christ led Paul to speak in the Areopagus. His message to the Athenians was clear. Seeing that they worshiped “an unknown God,” St. Paul revealed that divinity to be the God who made the whole world. Most importantly, this Creator of the universe is personally responsible for giving “life and breath and everything” to every human person. What a powerful truth! All who have life have received it from God Himself. This truth must be the driving force behind the pro-life movement. To deny another person their right to life is to rebel against the Author of Life Himself. The fact that God is the source of our life gives each person inestimable value. Remember this when you are feeling discouraged at your apparent lack of success when publicly defending the unborn. Those who fight for those who cannot fight for themselves are true disciples of the Risen Lord and acting as sons and daughters of the God of all. May the Author of Life bless the work of those whose lives are founded upon the truth that “it is He who gives to everyone life and breath and everything!”

Faith Challenge: Remember that God alone is the Author of Life by making acts of faith, and by renewing your commitment to fight, sacrifice, and pray for the safety of each irreplaceable life that has yet to see the light of day. As a daily practice, offer one prayer (e.g. Our Father, Hail Mary, or Glory Be) for each of your children/siblings/parents depending on your state in life in thanksgiving to the Author of the Lives that you hold dearest.
