02 Mar The First Shall Be Last (Mt 20:27-28) by Tara Ingebritsen
“Whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” ~ Mt 20:27-28
Reflection: In today’s Gospel Jesus says to His disciples, “whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” What a beautiful example Jesus has given us. We are called to serve! I think there is sometimes a danger in doing service work, of patting ourselves on the back at a job well done. That is not what we are called to do! Sometimes when we serve we look at people as less fortunate, which in some ways that may be true, but I think instead of seeing it that way, we should be looking at what they do have and learn from them. We serve not because we are ‘better off’ than those we serve, we serve because we love them. We serve because that is our brother we are serving. We serve because that IS Jesus and we are His humble servants. Lets strive to follow His example as we serve those who contemplate abortion, those who are hungry and homeless. Let us have a radical reverence for those living on the edge of society. Let us have the opportunity, the privilege to see the face of Christ in the oppressed.
.
Challenge: I challenge you to get to know someone you serve personally. Whether it is a homeless person you share a meal with or a pregnant woman going in for an abortion. Ask them their name, their story, and pray for them by name.
