The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once to your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved.  They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, ‘This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!'” ~ Ex 32:7-8 (full readings)

Angi’s Reflections:  God helped the Israelites flee from Egypt, and once things were good again, they turned away from His good Laws and began honoring false gods.  The Israelites were turning to material things.  They had melted their jewelry and were bowing down to a golden calf.  How often do we bow down to “golden calves” in our lives?  Think of the many times we turn away from God and turn to false hope in excessive spending, in pornography, in competitiveness, in judgment of others, in swearing, in drinking, in overeating, and in personal success not  focused on God’s good Will.  These “golden calves” get us nowhere fast. Abortion is a huge “golden calf” that has destroyed over 57 million American children since 1973.  A baby is aborted every 26 seconds in our nation, adding up to 3,300 children wasted every day.  This is a “golden calf” that needs to end now and as a nation we need to repent this injustice.  During this Lenten season, may we all put down our “golden calves” and keep our eyes fixed on our Lord Jesus.  May we stand up for Life and remember what Christ did for us all on that Holy Cross.
