31 Dec The Truth (1 Jn 2:18) by Shane Kapler
“Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared.” ~ 1 Jn 2:18 (full readings)
Shane’s Reflections: On this final day of the calendar year our minds naturally turn toward endings and new beginnings. Today’s first reading is a reminder that in the Church’s dark times, when “many antichrists have appeared,” and she has been persecuted to the point of martyrdom, her clinging to “the truth” has always allowed God to bring about a new birth. Today’s Gospel reading reminds us that as it was in the beginning, so it will be in the end: “In the beginning was the Word…What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1:1-4). Jesus – the way, truth and life – is unchanging, and therefore, utterly dependable.
