16 Feb These 40k of Lent (Mt 6:8) by Jimmy Mack
“Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” ~ Mt 6:8 (full readings)

Jimmy’s Reflections: For those of us who are into American football, the Super Bowl is over; and the “Combines” begin a week from today. The football Combines serve as a gathering place for professional teams in the USA to send their coaches and scouts to watch college football athletes show their skills in various events before the football draft during springtime. One such event is the 40 yard dash (that’s 36.58 meters for our team mates in other countries). We (including me) may brag about our 40 yard dash time. Yet do we apply this same sprint to our prayer life: to Our Father (who art in Heaven). As a child my father instructed me to lead the family in the grace before meals (just as in the Suggested Prayers list near the end of this devotion). I didn’t like it; so I sprinted through the prayer as a football athlete. When my life for Jesus made a pivot at age 15, one area I had to build my endurance was the grace before meals; and my prayer life from a 40 yard dash to a 40K life. Though the race is long, the Lord is present: whether your race today starts from Carson City; or from Taft heading south; or entering Seven Valleys Pennsylvania on your way to Maryland; or from the suburbs of San Antonio running north; or from your breakfast table, or from your office desk; or from your dirty clothes bin. We have blessed assurance.
