22 Apr Visible Faith (Jn 20:13) by Kevin McNicholas
“She said to them, ‘They have taken my Lord, and I don’t know where they laid him.'” ~ Jn 20:13 (full readings)
Kevin’s Reflections: Mary Magdalene speaks what is perhaps one of the most important lines of Faith in this verse. She refers to Jesus as “my Lord.” MY LORD! He is Lord, all of ours! She accepted and proclaimed that Jesus is Lord, the Son of God right here in the Gospel, and Who did she say this to? The Risen Christ Himself! Mary Magdalene had a past life that was considered unforgivable in the society of the time, but Jesus looked beyond all this, into her heart, and saw the person that God created, underneath her very human sins and failings. What a testament to her belief in the Son of God for Mary Magdalene in turn to call Him “my Lord.” I wonder if I call Jesus MY Lord through my own actions, my treatment of others, my choices? I pray today that others can see my Faith, not just my belief in God, because the devil “believes in God.” Belief is an acceptance of a truth (I believe that the sun rises in the East), whereas Faith is a real set of actions, and a lifestyle choice to live that belief!
* Kevin works at an Alternative Education program serving three counties in Southern Illinois. He and his wife Laura have an 18 month old miracle named Elliana (“the Lord Answers”) to love, and a son on the way! They have been blessed during the 8 years of their marriage to travel to Catholic pilgrimage sites worldwide.
Faith Challenge: Easter was last Sunday, but the Easter spirit of the Risen Christ never ends! Let us carry our Faith in the Resurrection into our daily lives, especially to those whom we find it hardest to love and forgive.
