20 Nov What Makes for Peace (Lk 19:41-44) by Kathy Forck
“As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, ‘If this day you only knew what makes for peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides. They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.’” ~ Lk 19:41-44 (full readings)

Kathy’s Reflections: By not accepting Jesus, the mediator of peace, Jerusalem will not find peace, but will become the victim of devastation. How I often ponder how our nation that accepts abortion is in the same place where we seem to be bent on destruction. As Jesus wept over Jerusalem, I have no doubt He weeps over the United States. As Jerusalem could not find peace, but only devastation, the United States seems to be following the same path. This is why Life Runners and the 40 Days for Life prayer vigils concentrate on prayer for conversion of hearts; hearts that instead of only seeking instant gratification in this world of relativism will instead seek love of neighbor as oneself and will put others ahead of one’s selfish desires. We are in the midst of a battle and a palisade is being erected around us. Our religious freedom is being attacked as well as the lives of the unborn. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal to all what makes for peace and that our eyes and our nation’s eyes will open and will see what is now hidden from so many. As my good friend, Bridget Van Means, President and CEO of ThriVe St. Louis, says so often, “Save the mother first and the baby will be saved.” We are in the battle of our lives and for lives. Let us not weary of this work, and in His time, the victory will be the Lord’s.
* Kathy Forck is the campaign co-director with her husband, Mike Forck of the Columbia, MO 40 Days for Life. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Mike and Kathy have coordinated the Midwest March for Life in Jefferson City since January of 2011 which brings together the Midwestern states.
