Worth Your Salt (Mt 5:13) by Dr. Rich Reich

salt“You are the salt of the earth.  But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?  It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” ~ Mt 5:13 (full readings)

Rich’s Reflections:   In ancient warfare, the victors would trample salt underfoot into the croplands of the defeated nation making the soil infertile and ensuring the vanquished people would not return to vitality and military strength.  Spiritual warfare works the same way.  Jesus saves us and turns us into “the salt of the earth” so that we may preserve and add flavor to the world.  However, without Jesus in us, we lose our flavor and go flat.  The devil then takes advantage of this situation by grinding our bland Christian lives into the memories of non-believers.  This strategy is aimed at keeping these potential Christians spiritually barren, thus preventing them from bearing fruit.  There are over 70 LIFE Runner chapters among our 2,600 members.  These chapters require leadership, assistance, spiritual guidance (chaplain), and active participation in pro-life events; otherwise, these chapters may risk becoming tasteless and flat.  A non-active chapter is worse than a group of active LIFE Runners without a chapter, because it bears no fruit.  We are the salt of the earth with the responsibility to share with others the bitterness of abortion.
