24 Aug Yes to God (Jn 1:50-51) by Kevin McNicholas
“Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.’ And he said to him, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'” ~ Jn 1:50-51 (full readings)

Kevin’s Reflections: I would say that Jesus let Nathanael know fairly certainly here what the reward for following Him would be! Nathanael doubted earlier, asking Philip “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” This was a humble town, with humble people living there. I think often about how the Holy Mother and St. Joseph must have felt as the Child Jesus grew up, and how their Faith in God was affirmed as they lived their daily lives with His Son. Mary and Joseph said “yes” to God, even though it meant that this Child would die as expiation for all of our sins. Jesus chose apostles who were humble people as well, who said “yes” to God, though it meant certain death for many of them. Is my Faith this strong? Nathanael exchanged only a few words with Jesus before proclaiming “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” His Faith was rewarded by way of Jesus’ promise that he would see Heaven! This is what God wishes for each of us, to see Heaven at the end of our lives! Today I am going to pray for the courage to love, reaching out especially to those who frustrate me.
