07 Oct You Shall Love (Lk 10:27) by Dr. Rich Reich
Welcome God now with this LIFE Group Devotion(FB), provided by LIFE Runners (FB). Leaders. Guest Authors
“He said in reply, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.'” ~ Luke 10:27 (full readings)
Rich’s Reflections: The underlying sickness of our divorce culture is the demeaning sense of possession. Lovers can speak of “belonging” to one another if they understand the proper limits of this language (i.e., the equal sharing of the gift of God’s love). The divorce culture suffers from lust, which leads to the demeaning sense of possession. The object I possess acquires a certain meaning for me since it is at my disposal and I avail myself of it (i.e., I use it). The “other” only has value so far as she (from the male perspective) is “useful” for me. As soon as she is not, she is no longer “loved.” At this point another more “useful” person will be sought; another person from whom I can more easily get the enjoyment I seek. This empty, counterfeit, possessive “love” is the root for many “unwanted” pregnancies, which unfortunately often leads to abortion. God is love; therefore, if men and women are to “belong” to each other in love, they must first belong to Christ.
